Suspension Knocking Sound Over Bumps: Common Causes

Knocking over bumps can come from links, bushes, mounts, joints, absorbers or loose underbody parts. Shake testing can help reproduce hard-to-find noises.

A knocking or kluk-kluk sound over bumps can travel through the chassis, so the loudest place is not always the actual source.

Common areas to inspect

  • Stabiliser links and bushes.
  • Control-arm bushes and ball joints.
  • Absorber mounts and related hardware.
  • Steering components.
  • Loose underbody panels or brackets.

Why a suspension shaker helps

Controlled movement can help reproduce play or knocking that is difficult to detect while the car is static.
